Homemade Laundry Detergent
With just four ingredients, you can make laundry detergent at home any time! You can get all these ingredients in paper wrappings and/or paper boxes. Washing soda and Borax are usually sold in the laundry aisle. Make sure to store it somewhere animals and little children cannot reach.
Time: 20 minutes
Makes about 4 cups
Ingredients:
Castile soap (5oz, no scent)… 1/2 bar
Baking soda… 1 cup
Washing soda… 1.5 cup
Borax… 1.5 cup
(Optional: essential oil of your choice… about 20 drops)
–Steps–
1. Using a grater, finely grate half bar of soap.
(If you have a mixer, you can use it to grate the soap using an attachment.)
2. Mix all the powder ingredients, grated soap, and essential oil (if using) together.
3. Store in an airtight jar with a lid.
–How To Use–
Add the detergent directly into the drum with dirty clothes.
High efficiency laundry machine… 1 Tbsp
Regular laundry machine… 2-3 Tbsp
[Zero-Waste Tip]
- Save some jars or containers with lids to store the detergent!
- Borax tends to become clumpy when it’s in contact with moisture. So store the Borax box somewhere dry. (Borax is a natural mineral which is used in cleaning products. By adding borax, it boosts the washing).
- Feel free to double the recipe!
